The present Directorate of Immigration and Passport was started in 1962 as a Directorate with Zonal Office, Dhaka and Regional Passport Offices in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi and Khulna with the aim of providing assistance to the citizens of Bangladesh in traveling abroad. A full-fledged Directorate of Immigration and Passport was established in 1973 in independent sovereign Bangladesh. The number of offices is 6 (six) including Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi and Khulna offices with the main office of the Directorate located in Dhaka. The year 2010 saw a revolutionary change in the Directorate of Immigration and Passports. Machine Readable Passport (MRP) and Machine Readable Visa (MRV) process started in accordance with International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) guidelines. Also, if 19 regional passport offices are destroyed, the number of offices will be 34 (thirty four). Besides, 6 visa cells and 9 immigration check posts were created. In 2011, 33 (thirty three) regional passport offices were created. At present, the work of establishing passport offices in every district of the country has been completed. Besides, MRP and MRV projects have been implemented in 73 Bangladeshi missions around the world. At present, the strength of the Directorate of Immigration and Passport is 1184 people. 3,12,60,212 Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) and 16,31,008 Machine Readable Visas (MRVs) have been successfully printed till September 27, 2021
